When this story was told to the manager of a Surrey dairy he was able to relate a similar experience. Last summer the military authorities commandeered the entire stock of hay on a farm, paying money down for it. Only a portion of the stock was required to be delivered at once, however, and instructions were given for the remainder to bo retained until further orders. As nothing more was heard, the farmer wrote to the military authorities, rind an officer came down, inspected the hay, and explained where it was to be sent. Some time afterwards the farmer received a cheque for £170 for the. hay, which had hoen left on the farm. He sent the cheque back, with the reminder that the hay had been paid for once, but it was returned to'him, and it has since been paid into the bank.
