FOUR GERMAN NEWSPAPERS SUPPRESSED
FOR REPORTING THE DITTMAN CASE. Copenhagen, February 6. Four German newspapers, including the "Deutsche Zeitung," have been suppressed for reporting details of the Dittman case. According to -tho "Deutsche Zeitung," Herr Dittmau, in his defence, said that the strike was a spontaneous reaction against martial law and the pan-German propaganda, and also in favour of a peace by understanding.— Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. I "WITHOUT ANY TAGS" ♦ —■ — AUDITOR ON THE CITY'S ACCOUNTS. The Finance Committee of the City Council reported last evening that they had received the following report from the corporation auditor on the city's accounts for the year 19161917, . and they recommended that the report bo adopted and the'' recommendation regarding the future sale of corporation chattels being on a cash basis be given effect to: — "I have to report that I have signed tho balance-sheet of the Wellington City Council. Tho samo has been returned by the Audit Department, this time without any tags. "Rents: Tho rents outstanding at March 31, 1917, call for no special attention. A large portion of them has since been paid. "AVaterAccounts: These are again in a satisfactory condition. There are one or two accounts which have been outstanding for some considerable time, but these have either been largely reduced or satisfactory adjustments made. "Sundry Work done by Engineer's Department: On tho whole, these accounts have come in very well. Mosj; of the amounts duo at Jlarcli 31, 1917. havo been collected, and 1 note that the instructions given by your committee regarding cash being paid for the small amounts, are carried out, which obviates a considerable amount of book-keeping in this department. I would suggest that where any of tho corporation's chattels are sold instructions be given that these be on a cash basis. "Sundry Debit Balances: I notice that there are several amounts due by sports clubs for the use of the reserves. These, I understand by a resolution of your council, are left in abeyance until the end of the war. . . . "Sinking Funds: I havo to report I have examined the sinking funds securities and find them in order. At March 31, 1917, there were only two overdue, and since then arrangements have been made for the renewal of same. AH interest has been received, and there are no arrears. 1 might add that I do not think the sinking funds have ever been in a better condition than they are at the present moment." The Mayor said that the auditor's report spoke for itself. He was sure that Mr; Clarke's work as auditor gave satisfaction, and was appreciated by every member of the council.
