TROTTING

AUCKLAND SUMMER MEETING,

STEEL BELL WINS THE OUP.

(By Telegraph—Snecial Correspondent.)

'Auckland,' December 27. The Auckland Trotting Club's Hummer Meoting opened in glorious .weather, lhere was a.record attendance. The earn ol £31104 108. was put through the totalisator against £24,584 108. for the corresponding day o£ laet year " 'Ao Auckland Trotting: Cup proved a comparatively easy victory lor that brilliantly'consistent mare ateel Bell. Prior to the race Ohid had bean much boomed, and rumours of wonderful performances were iu oiroulation. When the machine oponed for the race it looked as if he would be made a warm favourite, but Steel Bell, who looked very fit commended herself to the public, and she wen out favourite. Mahinga, Waverley, Asturio, Harold Junior, and Peter Mac were also well backed. Soon after, the tapes went ud Ohid shot to the front, and his supporters seemed to think that the race was won, but he had hardly got clear of Derby Dillon before lie broke and fell back into second place. He came again, however, and again established a lead, but was never ablo to get quite dear of the others. After three-quarters of a mile had been traversed. Sir Fulham, trotting in fine style, svrept into the front division, and Harold Junior and _ Waverley also looked dangerous at certain stages of tne race All the time Steel Bell was iroprovinz her position, and a mile from homeahe was well within striking distance. She cut down her opponents in grand etyle, and half a mile from the winning poet she seized tho lead from Waverley, who had been going very steadily from the 'first. The race was then practically over. Though Waverley's pilot made a great eflort to get in front again, Steel Bell made no mistakes, and won very decisively with a good deal. to spare. It was a very • popular and well-deserved victory. The withdrawal of a number of the bestknown southern horses deprived the race of some of its distinction, but it was nevertheless. a ; decidedly, interesting event. By Telegraph—Press Association.
