THE LOST FRENCH CRUISER
SUBMARINE SUNK BY SRELLFIRE. (Roe. December 23, 5.5 p.m.) Paris, December 21. The cruiser Chateaurenault was torpedoed in the lonian Sea. A torpedo struck her on the starboard side and the engine-rooms filled wish water. The submarine reappeared on the port side and fired a second torpedo. Vrhi)e the troops and tho crow were entering the boats the Chateaurenault's gunners shelled the submarine. Torpedoboats joined in the fight-, hitting the submarine, which sank head foremost. Twenty-two of tho Germans, including tho captain, were rescued.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. [The Chateaurenault, which was an old cruiser utilised as a transport, was sunk on December 14. Tho previous message' stated that ten sailors were missing.]
