MAGISTRATE'S COURT
ALIENS AND PASSPORTS.
Mr. D. G. A.'Cooper, S.M., presided at the Magistrate's Court yesterday and dealt with the-followmg cases:— ' Five aliens named respectively Url Axel Carlson, Karl Roslap, _ Frank Mevor. Sven P. Pettcrsen, and Allen ■Amlerjson, alias Erling Bergethon, seamen, were charged with landing m New Zealand without being m possession of a passport, contrary to the War Bogula'tiotis. Mr. O'Leary appeared for Meyer. . Chief Detective Boddam stated that tho men had been fully informed of the regulations and were told that they could not land without possessing a passport. He pointed out that tho aliens arriving here, and against whom nothing was knnwn were a menace to the country. The Magistrate sentenced each of the accused to a month s imprisonment, and they wore ordered to bo placed on board their vessel should it sail before, the expiry of the sentence. This applied to all the men except Frank Meyer, who is serving a sentence of six months' imprisonment for ■committing an indecent act. James Graham Hewitt was charged that at Auckland on August 11 ho did with, intent to defraud by moans of a false pretence, representing himself as a returned, soldier, obtain goods valued it £6 from Ilallenstoin Bros., Ltd. At irenS of Chief Detective Boddam accused was remanded-to appear in Auckland at H o'clock to-day. For .insobriety two first offenders were convicted and. discharged, and a third/who failed to appear, had his •bail of 20s. estreated, .
