NOTES AND COMMENTS
[BY GIHNCOE.I Owners .are reminded that acccptances for the first day's handicaps at tho Hawke's Bay Jockey Club's Summer Meeting, to be held on January 1 and 2, close with Secretary H. 8. Moss at 8 p.m. tomorrow night. It turns out that Vagabond's was not the only acceptance that ivas missed at Ellori/,ie. The owner cE Philomel also omitted. to accept for his filly in tho Nursery Handicap, but she will be a runuer on tho second day of 'he meeting. II iff understood that representations have been made to the committee of the Auckland liacing Olub to allow the visiting two-year-olds to gallop cn the coursc proper prior to the opening of the meeting, as is tho practice at Biccarton. It. is st, well-known fact that visiting' horses arc at a disadvantage when racing on the lilierjlip courßo for the first time, and as there is such a. lot of interest in the' Great Northern Foal Stakes tho Auckland Baoing Club, which has done so much to foster high-class racing, will doubtless grant this concession. Wera it otherwise, it may interfere with the success of the first raco the crack two-year-olds are having over a distance. In the past tho winner of the Foal Stakes has i always been a champion, and as there ure at least four youngsters with undeniable chances in Wednesday's race, it is naturally provoking a great deal of interest amongst sportsmen throughout the Dominion The succcssful trotting trainer J. Bryee passed through Wellington yesterday on his way to nttend tho Auckland meeting next week. ■ • If Monelftus should win the Auckland Cup on Boxing Bay he will equal the perform anio of St. Hippo, who scored ill both caps in 1892. Under existing law' in Tasmania not more than seven races are allowed per day. If a similar law Tvera cuacled in tho Dominion few people would cavil at it. At • Ellerslie on Tuesday morning tho local Cup candidates, Menelaus, Johnny Walker, and Seadown, wero galloped over ten furlongs. They were not on a timemaking -mission, and all finished together. After working at Ellerslie on Tuesday Michael O'Leary ißunyan—Lady Minnie), while • walking to the • scraping sheds, dropped dead from heart failure. Later in the morning Fag (Harvow-Yane) broke his Bhoulder, while working on the tan, atjd had to be destroyed Tho Marton traliier, J. Farmer, has en. gaged boxes at Awapuni for tho coming meeting, so probably Lingerie will bo racing at the Manawfttu fixture and not at Ellerslie Sweet Corn ptarted a hot order in a big field for the Clyde Ftakes, six furlongs, run at. Kosehill on December 8, but she failed to show up at any stage of the race. Tho" race v;ai won by The Welkin maro Poitrina, who as the best two-year-old in Sydney )n 1915. The runner-np to Poitrina was Some Boy (Oyrus-Thc Tart). High Jinks, who won a tack raco at Woodville last year in the colours of Mr, F. O. Davis, was a full sister to Soma Boy, but she. afterwards proved untrainable.
