THE CALL TO ARMS
Sir,—l was at Tauherenikau races, and was not only surprised but disgusted to see single men who had been drawn in the ballot weeks ago and passed as lit for active service still in civilian clothos. If they had any British pluck in them they would havo been at the front long ago, where my son and thousands of other lads wont without boing forced into the ranks at tho point of the bayonet. Amongst those at the raccs with field glasses on his shoulder was a certain individual holding a good fat billet to various racing clubs, and also trainers, etc., galore. My son left a good job, and many others did likewise to no and do their bit while these dodgers remain in comfort at nome. What I and many other parents would liko to know, Sir, is why are i married nien being called up while such people are not in camp being put through their facings, etc.? Can you, Sir, tell us who it is that is sheltering them from donning khaki?—l am, ctc., MUSKET.
[The explanation may be found in the fact that many single men have, been turned down as medically unfit for service.]
