THE PALESTINE VICTORIES

Cairo, December 17. Up to date 662 Turkish officers and 11,474 men have been taken prisoner in Palestine,—Router.

There died at Potone on Monday, after a brief illness, an old and respected resident, Mr. W. Henry. A few nights ago, Mr. Henry, who was suffering from a cold, got out of bed in tho dark and took a doso'of disinfectant instead of cough mixture. The fluid had such an effect on his system' that it ultimately caused his death. In his young days Mr. Henry followed tho sen, and later settled on the West Coast, where ho remained for a number of years. Upwards of thirty years ago lie moved to Petone, where he engaged in business, and was a member of tho first Town Board formed at Petono. Mr. Henry was an enthusiastic bowler, and as a member of the Petona Club attended many bowling tournaments. Ho was respected by everyone who was acquainted with him. Ho leaves n widow, a son;- and several daughters to mourn their loss. \Tke son (J. Henry) is at the front, one of the daughters is the wifo of Mr. W. Hen-di-v, of Lower Hutt, and another tho wife_ of Mr. W. Croft, of Petone. In moving a motion of sympathy with tho widow and family, the Mayor of Petonu on Monday eveninc. at the Petone Borough Council meeting, referred to the kindly qualities of Mr. Henry, and to his connection with municipal polities as a member of tho old Town Board. The motion was carried, by standing. The following n.c.o.'s and men of the 34th Specialists Signal Section having passed tho prescribed tests are classified as trained signallers, and are entitled to wear the efficiency badge:— Sergt. D. M.Bryan, Lance-Corpl. R. S. Wogan, Ptes. H. F. Ericson, J. P. Harris, S. W. Hills, J. A. G. MacKay, H. R. Moore J. W. Pearson, T. Rushbridge, E. A. Trustrum, J. H. Williams. Tho following temporary appointments have been approved by tho Camp Commandant at Featherston:—Ptes. W. J. Thompson, C. Biggs, A. Anderson, 37th M.R., to ho lance-corporals; Corpls. E. V. Phillips, A. Sandol, W. R. Tuck, G. E. Whitney, F Company, 25th, to bo temporary sergeants. A dunce is to be held at, the Sydney Street Soldiers' Club this evening in honour of the 33rd Reinforcements.
