THE CONSCRIPTION REFERENDUM

REMARKABLE TRIBUTE TO MR. . HUGHES (Rec. December 8, 10.30 p.m.) Sydney, December 18. If the reception accorded to Mr. W. M. Hugbes (the Federal' Prime Minister) on arrival at Sydney was any criterion of the publio feeling on the referendum, the Government's rur* porters must have felt highly gratified. Thousands of returned soldiers met.Mr. Hughes at the station and carried him shoulder-high in a remarkable demonstration through the crowded streets. The speeches were wildly, cheered. It was probably the greatest reception Mr. Hughes ever had.—Press Assn.
