BRICKLAYERS FOR BRITAIN
VOLUNTEERS URGENTLY REQUIRED. » It was announced by the Commonwealth' Minister of Defence recently that, in rosponso to an «urgont request from tho Imperial Government, the Commonwealth Government had decided to dispatch a number of bricklayers to Great Britain for construction work, under tho Munitions Ministry. Tho conditions of enrolment would be similar to thoso in regard to munition workers and carpenters, and similar allowances would bo paid to dependants resident in Australia, with an additional special allowance to dependants of 10s. per week during four months of tho English winter, to make up for timo that might be lost by tho men owing to weather conditions. This special allowanco would not apply to men without dependants. Senator Pearco that the communication from the British Government indicated that the men wera needed most urgently, and he expressed a hope that volunteers would respond quickly to the call. Ho anticipated that shipping accommodation would he availablo to permit of tho dispatch of tho first quota about tho middle of December.
The ruling rato of pay in Greab Britain for bricklayers is Is. IJd. per hour for a week of 54 hours. Selections will ba made from men between the ages of 35 and 50 years, and selected applicants will 1)0 | required to pass a medical examination as to physical fitness.
