4 REPLIES TO VENDORS' QUESTIONS

Lust month tho secretary of the Wellington Milk Vendors' Association (Mr. A. J. Pofchorick) ivroto to tho Town Clork requesting certain information on matters concerning the milkclearing station (now being erected at Thorndon) and its control. To that letter, which was published in theso columns on October 20, tho following reply has been received under date November 19: — "Sir,— Referring to your letter of tho 1 17th ultimo, making certain inquiries regarding the temporary milk station to bo opened at Thorndon, and tho inothod of working same, I am directed to reply as follows:— "Has tho consent of the- Minister of Public Health been obtained as to tho site and plans? (Sec. 6.)— Yes. "When is it expected that tho milk station will be ready 'to receive and handle supplies.? (Sec. 7.)— Probably in December next, but tho date- will bo publicly notified, as required by tho Act. ■ -.
"What 'suburban milk will not be put through tho milk station? (Sees. 8 and 9.)—Tho Wellington City Milk Supply Act, 1910, and its amendments provide that all suburban milk shall pass through the milk station. "What form of warranty will the vendor receive- on delivery of supplies to him at the milk station?—No warranty of any kind. "To what oxteut will ho ho entitled to.testing records kopt at the. milk station in tho event of proceedings being taken against him for soiling milk which docs not comply with tho provisions of tho Sale of Food and Drugs Act, 1908? —Tho records will always be availablo and can bo obtained wlicn necessary. < "When will tho vendor bo deemed the owner of tho milk, as" now, at the railway station on which the farmer places his cans for carriage, or at tho clenring-houso after tho supply is tested?— There will bo no alteration in this respect; tho milk is consigned to tho vendor, not to the Wellington City Council, but tho vendor cannot tako possession until tho milk has been through tho milk station. "What will bo tho method employed at tho milk station in receiving, testing, and clearing supplies ?—This cannot be answered in detail at present. The manager will deal with tho matter as- circumstances require. ■ "What will be tho cost to the p\iblic duo to such method being employed?— One halfpenny per gallon will bo charged on tho milk dealt witli at tho milk station, but it does not follow that any additional charge will bo mado to tho public. "What arrangements will be made for: (a) Pasteurising milk, if such.is necessary ?—Cannot say at present. Matter will be dealt with by tho manager. "Clearing and returning vendors' cans P-—Vendors' cans are not proposed to be dealt with. "Cpol storage ,of milk until delivery is taken by vendors?— None whatever; thero is no present intention of storing milk. "Period within which delivery shall bo taken by vendors?—lmmediately tho milk : is doalfc' with by the manager or Iris staff delivery must bo taken. "Difference between , amount of milk' consigned by the farmer to the vendor and the amount delivered by tho nilfe station to the vendor duo to: (I) ihort consignments; (2) loss in milk itation handling?— This matter will not )e recognised at the milk station. "What will bo tho responsibility of lie council and tho vendor respectively or such differences ?—No responsibilty whatever upon the council. "Will tho milk station be open day md night, to handle Supplies which unler present conditions arrivo by train it 9 a.m., 11.50 a.m., 12.20 p.m., 4.17 ).m., 10.C5 p.m., and,a goods train ar•iving at any time between 10 p.m. ind 1 a.m.?—Tho milk station will ho ipen as may hereafter be decided, aciording to prevailing circumstances. . "What arrangements will be made 'or carting, Lambton Station milk to ;ho milk station at Thorndon, and will such cost bo included in the general :ost at tho milk station and bo bo ;harged to tlio public ?—Motor-lorries will be used, and it is expected that the halfpenny per'gallon above referred to will cover all costs in connection ivitb the matter."
