THE UPPER HUTT-KAITEOKE ROAD
(To the Editor.) Sir,—At tho last meeting of tho Hutt County Council the inspector of roads in his report stated that the roads in the county were in very fair order. I don't know what ho calls fair order, but tho main Upper Hutt to Kaitoko Road is in a most disgraceful state, and if the inspector would only drive a cart over it he would soo for himself. Why, sir, there are boulders as big as a man's head in tho ruts._ Talk about tho rocky roads to Dublin, they are not a patch on this road. The County Council lose hundreds of pounds a year just through sheer neglect. If the inspector would only go along the road on a wet day he would see water running down tlie ruts lor hundreds of chains, washing the gravel out and leaving the boulders for the publio to cart over. In threo years I have scon three lots of gravel put near tho Bloomfield Houso, and evory rain washed it all away through sheer neglect in not making a water-table to take the water off the roads. I have had sevoral years' experience in looking after roads, and if my roads wero kept in tho same order as these roads are kept I would soon have had the shift. As the council has somo new blood now I hope thoy will pay a visit of inspection and seo for themselves. Thanking vou, sir,—l am, etc.. A TR AVELLER,
