MAGISTRATE'S COURT
ATTEMPTED THEFT OF A CRATE OF CHEESE. Mr, S. E. M'Carthy, S.M., presided, at tho Magistrate's Court yesterday, and dealt with tho police cases. Edward Sullivan, a trimmer on board a. transport, pleaded guilty to tho attempted theft of a. crate of. c.heeso valued at 4:5, tho property of the New Zealand Defence Department. It wa3 explained by Chief Dutcctivo Boddam that tho vessel's No. 1 hold was loaded with chcesfl and other foodstuffs, and at 5 p.m. tho hatches were closed down. Just beforo midnight tho nightwatchman noticed tho hatches, had been removed from No. 1 hold, ,and, looking down, saw tho accused, below. When the man climbed back on to tho deck he 6tated that ho had gone below to get some matches. When interviewed by detectives, ho admitted that lie had intendod taking a crato of cheese, and selling! it. Accused, in answer to tne Magistrate, said ho was drunk at tho time. The Magistrate remarked that stealing from ships was. rife, throughout tho Dominion, and thousands of pounds' worth of goods wore stolen. Something must bo done to put a stop to this pilfering. Sullivan was sentenced to six months' imprisonment: Victor Kallinikos, for whom Mr. H. FO'Leary appeared, was, remanded to Wednesday on a charge, of indecent assault on a fomalo. Bail was allowed in <£100 and two. sureties of ,£SO, each, A iremand to. Wednesday next' was granted in the, case of John-. S.lines, charged with indecent assault on males (four charges). Accused declined to ask for bail.
Thomas Henry- .George, was charged with, being an idle and. disorderly- person, in that lit* possessed insufficient lawful, moans, of support, and was remanded, for a week'in order that further inquiries might bo made. For insobriety, two - first offenders wero each-fined" 105,,. in.default- 24 hours' imprisonment, and another, was., fined 205.., with; tho-. option, of- scrying -18: hours; in gaol. CIVIL CASES. A case presenting some peculiar features was heard by Mr. .W: G. Riddell, S.M. The case was, ono. in', which, the New. Zealand. Bacon • Company,. . Ltd., claimed from J'. Olliver, of Taucru, the sura of JGII "Bs. 3dv for goods, supplied. The. plaintiff produced a. telegram and a, letter signed by-J. Olliver ordering-the goods, which; wero-duly forwarded. The. defence, was that- Olliver did not order the, goods, from the. plaintiff, but, that they were ordered, by- a small tradesman ■named Longj who had.a:'sliop at Fe'atherston Camp. Delivery was accepted by Long. The, plaintiff;,was -.non-suited. Mr. F. E. AVard appeared for tho- Bacon Con>pany and, Mr. Noble. (Masterton) for tho, defendant.

Begg and Co., music dealers, Manners Street, proceeded against Mrs. S. Willoughby to recover the sum of £\ ss. 10d,, balance alleged to be duo : for music eupplied.
