MOTOR TRAFFIC
MOTORISTS WANT SPEED LIMITS INCREASED. Tho By-laws Committee reported to last night's meeting of llio City Council as> follows: — "That they have been wailed upon by a deputation from tho Wellington Automobile Club, who asked that tho speed limits of motor-cars passing street intersections bo altered from oiglit miles to twelve miles per hour, and from four miles to six miles per hour turning corners, and also that tho number of parking places for private cars bo increased, and the conditions regarding the backing of cars into tho kerb line bo varied. Tho committee hnve Ikaen steps to inquiro into tho speed limits fixed in other centres, and as soon as this information is available, further consideration will be given lo tho question, and a report will be forwarded lo the council.
"That the sufigestions of the motor inspector on flio following matters be dealt with as under.—(a) Motor Patrol: The motor inspector suggested the appointment of a man to patrol the city constantly to report breaches of trafiic Bylaws and Motor Regulation Act, in order that prosecutions can bo made.—That no action be _taken in the meantime, (b) Speed Limit Indication Boards: The in. 6pector suggested that notice boards indicating the various speed limits be placed at tho busiest street corners and intersections, and on the roads at tho city boundaries.—That the by-law relating to speed limits be printed and placed in the tramway waiting-sheds and on taxicab stand telephone boxes, together with the scale of fares, the whole being printed on a card in an abridged form, (c) Diversion of Traffic" from Congested Streets—Tho suggestion made by the inspector is that traffic proceeding from Cuba Street to Lambton Quay shall go via Manners and Willis Streets, and trafiic from Lambton Quay to Cuba Street shall go via Pannma or Grey ritreet and Jerrois Quay; and the diversion rf traffic into Marion Street to reliore Cuba Street—That owing to the congestion of traffic in Manners and Willis Streets and Lambton Quay, every endeavour be made to have permanent roadways constructed in Jervois Quay, Wakefield Street, and Clyde Quay. ' "That tho Wellington Taxi-Owners' Asbe "Informed that tho council cannot givo them any official recognition. While tho council have no power to allot any particular stand to certain of the association's member?, they will have no objection to tho working of a mutual arrangement made by their members to occupy particular stands, t~hat will facilitate a better taxicab service to the publlo."
