NOTES AND COMMENTS
\m GLENCOE.I Tho 0.J.0. fixture-will bo concluded at Iticcartou 'td-day. Unfortunately, what should have been tho star item is spoilt, nB only one unknown horse will oppose Mr. T. H. Lowry's roprcseutativo in the Stead Gold Oup. In thoMiddlcton Hurdles, one railo ani three-quarters, Portland Lady will bfi better suited by the shorter distance. II M'Sweeucy, rider of Don Francisco, declared after Monday's race that ho was unlucky not to win, so it will bo interesting to seo how ho fares to-day. Naupata will bo at homo on tho long Elccarton straights, but tho old fellow had an ugly fall on Monday, and it may havo left him Bomcwhat sore. Subterfuge, the good-looking but ponyish daughter of Counterfeit, will bo having her third race when euo contests tho Apprentices' Handicap, seven furlongs, and on this account she may not saddle up as well as her owner would wish. Spanglo came from a long way back on Monday, nud was finishing very fast after getting out out in tho first furlong. This pair and E. J. Mason's representative, Missouri may bo tho best fancied when the machine closes. Demagogue did not raco well on the opening' day, but ho galloped well on Thursday morning, and may bo expected o do considerably better to-day. It Is likely that Pontoon will be withdrawn in. his favour, so that Gray may be found on Demagogue. Flninark, tho full-bro-ther to Estland, stays on well, and tho extra furlong will not bo against him. Most of the Oup horscß will bo seen out in the Metropolitan Handicap, ono mile and a half. Client should be a greatly improved horsa for tho race ho had on Monday, and may go out a good favourite to-day. Ho was too fresh on Monday, and pulled vory hard over tho first part of tho race. The Our> effort will sober him down, and 0. Price will bo ablo to get him in behind his field Multifual is improving with racing, and Teka has already run two good races. A likoly ono amongst the bottom weights is Wardancor, who is staying on better now. Comment, Bst. 21b., will be better suited by tbo distanco in tbe Avon Welter Handioap, and so will Black Ada, Bst. 81b. Qazique, ?st. 71b., will not be meeting such a strong field as he opposed.in tho Stewards' Handicap. Tho Fendalton Handicap is this year run over a mile course. Tho favourite this afternoon may bo Paraoa, 7st. 101b., a winner at Trcntham. To-day he will have Gray's services. At Trenthani he carried 7st. 61b., and tho beaten division included Chortle, a winner at Avondale, and Form Up, the 0.J.0. Stewards winner. After his declslvo victory at Avondalo under 9st. 91b., Ohortle could not very
well have got in tlio Oity Handicap at Elleralio to-day with less than lOst. 41b. It oannot by any stretch of imagination be said that Mr. MacManomin has been hard on him, for tlio field is a weak one, and tho Multlfld gelding is very hard to stop when at his best, for he handles weight well, and is thoroughly at homo on tho right-handed going. It may bo cxpectcd that lie will run a good race today. and ho may again Account for thorns he defeated last week. A TiSwcomcr in the field is Hopfleld, who may race better at Elleralio than ho did at Avondale.
