THE HOUSE
SUPERANNUATED CIVIL SERVANTS The House of Representatives met at 2.30 p.m. The Hon. A. L, HERDMAN moved that the amendments made in the War Legislation Amendment Bill by the Legislative Council be agreed to. Mr. W. A. VEITCH (Wanganui) took exception to the amendment to that clause relating to the retention in the service of men after the time had arrived for their retirement on superannuation.
Sir. T. 31. WILFOBD (Hutt) thought that the amendment should be disagreed with, for the reason that the acceptance of employment by a man would deprive ft wife of her old-age pension. He would ask that the right'of a woman to her pension should be safeguarded. Mr. R. A. WRIGHT (Wellington Suburbs) said that he. also thought th'e amendment had made the Bill rather worse tftrm before, and he thought the House should disagree with the amendment.
The Hon. A. L. HERDMAN said that the point raised by Mr. Wilted was not affected in any way by the Bill. To mfret it fresh legislation -would be required. These remarks Mr. Herdman had made with the indulgence of the House, and. when the debate on the amendment con-' tinued for some time Mt. Herdman asked the House to disagree with the femeudment, in order that he might /have it struck out in the Upper House. He moved accordingly. This latter motion was agreed to. i 1 j
