MAGISTRATE'S COURT

POLICE AOT CIVIL GASES. Itr. S. E. M'Oarthy, S.M., presided at the Magistrate's Court yosterday, and heard the police cases. Victor David, an Assyrian, was charged with assaulting James Barry, gatekeeper at tho grandstand, at the Trentham Racecourse on Monday.

According to tho evidence, the acoused. was- asked by Barry for hie ticket. Ho said ho had it in his pocket in his overcoat, which was in tho cloakroom. A race was just about to ho run, and accused ran away to seo it. Later the eatekceper saw the accused near the totalisator. and again aekeahim for his tioket. So then asked him for his name, which accused refused to give, and struck the catekoper several blows. Bereeant Bird, of Petone, happened to be near the scene, and aften a Btrugßle arrested the accused. After hearing the evidence the Magistrate convicted and fined him £5 and costs, in default one month's imprisonment.

James Wonanhan. who was found helplessly drunk, was fined m default 48 hours' imprisonment,-and was also to pay medical expenses, 17s. 6d., nith the option of seven dVys' imprisonment. two first offenders were each fined ,a)s.,. in default 48 hours' imprisonment, and an ; other was fined 10s„ in default 24 hours imprisonment.
