WOMAN'S WORLD
(Continued from page 2.}
Load-Carrying Capacities. A. woman's load-carrying capaolty, as compared with a man's, iias been very sensibly worked out by the Post Office in employing women to deliver tho posts, states "The. Queen." A man's maximum load, has been 351b., and tho Post Office lias fixed a .woman's maximum load at 20lb. It is to bo hoped that a general reconsideration of weight-carrying may be ono of the servioes women will have dono for tho country. There is no doubt that men in many of work have been expected to carry too much. The recruiting for the Army has revealed an appalling amount of permanent physical Jnjury due to lifting heavy sacks. And the. great weights are simply due to the habit of reckoning by certain quantities which might just as well be °.® e Tvould expect a woman to carry or lift the same weights as'"men can Jandle, but it is hardly probable that tiie average difference would naturally
be so great as is indicated by these Post Office regulations, which wake a woman's load little more than half of a man's. If a man's lifting capacity is reckoned at nearly twice a woman's, it is certainly put too high. From every point of view it is to ho hoped that the normal man's load will he reduced—not perhaps in this particular instance, for 351b. is not. an excessive. weight, but in industries generally. For if the differences between londs Is to remain sq very great thero will he an obvious difficulty in securing anything like an "equal wage" for women.
