A year ago we "were able (says • tho "Trade Bevicw") to congratulate tho Government and the people of New Zealand on the successful .Jlotation locally of the first -war loan, when eight millions was asked for and 9) millions subscribed in, ten days. When a further isßiie of 12 millions waß announced last month, doubt' was expressed in some quarters as to such, an amount being forthcoming, but we held that the country was quite capablo of raising the sum. and this has been fully borne out. When the result was announced it was found that over 16 millions had been subscribed in about as many This is a wonderful testimony to the wealth, and patriotism of the community, and wo havo no fears as to. tho ability oi tho Government to obtain the balance of the 22 millions required when, the time arrives. However, what concerns us most at present in considering tho state of tho monoy. market, iB the probable effect of this enormous absorption of funds on th© available supply of fluids for ordinary requirements. The money remains in circulation locally, and consequently- is mainly Btill in the hands of the banks, who should therefore still have sufficient funds for their legitimate requirements. We hear that two issues of fresh capital for' commercial undertaking involving about £150,000 were oversubscribed. Money for investment on mortgage will probably not be over plentiful, especially as exra taxation, will reduce the returns in the 'case of big lenders to less than the war loan pays, unless of course higher r<u.tes are charged. The export season is'just beginning and presentp rospects are favourable to production being, well maintained. 1 The 'sheep returns show a record total of 25.270.386. and the cattle also show in- ; crease. Much depends on weather conditions and shipping facilities, however, but I values are almost certain to keep at ahigh level for the present. • STOOIC EXCHANGE. Sy Telegraph—Press Association.
