SEAMEN'S STRIKE

OFFICERS PAID OFF. There was still no change yesterday in the situation respecting the. strike of local seamen 011 the smaller steamers trading out of Wellington. Yesterday the masters, mates, ongineers, and cooks of eleven, of the coastal steamers idle owing to the seamen's dispute were paid off. The other vessels are to pay off to-day. Since tho start of the trouble the officers and the cooks have been on full pay, which amounted to about £Si a month. Although the ships' articles are closed, the' captains and engineers will receive a shore allowance and tho cep-' tains will continue to 6leep on tueir ships. The following are the steamers which are out of commission Defender, Hawera, Blenheim, Waverley, Ivaitoa', Kapiti, Kapuni, Wakatu, Queen af the South, Wootton, and Nikau. The crew wo*o yesterday paid off the overseas steamer, which, the waterside workers declined to unload. The.usual call for labour was made yetsenlay, hut there was no response from the workers. It is understood that negotiations are proceeding between the Government and tho Seamen's Union with regard to the setting up of the proposed tribunal to settle the differences, presumably on the points concerning the conditions on which the union will agree to abide, by the tribunal and its decision.
