WOMAN SENT TO PAKATOA

At the Magistrate's Court yesterday Mr. s: B. M'Carlhy, S.M., was on the Bench. Elsie Neville,,for whom Mr. I'. W. jack, son appeared, was charged with being drunk on September 6-and again on.boptombcr- 20., Inspector Marsack said tne woman was a'-nuisance to tho police. When first arrested for drunkenness it was fouud necessary to send her to tho Hospital, where she stayed fpr two days and then escaped. Sho got, drunk a second time. Sho was again ""•fed and again sent to tho Hospital. The Inspector described her as an old offender. She had been committed to the Pakatoa, Inebriates Home last year, but for some reason or other got out of the institution before, tho time expired. Mr. P. W. Jackson made a stroug plea that, tho woman should not, be sent back to Pakatoa, where she had suffered in health. She had a mother In Ohristchurch who owned property and was willing to take her back and look after her. The woman herself possessed property in Christchurch worth between iooo and £700. She was willing to have a prohibition order" against her. The Magistrate committed the woman to the Pakatoa Home for a period of. two years. Louis Hardy, convicted of disorderly hehaviour while drunk, was hned 405., in .default seven days' impnspnmejit. For insobriety. Kenneth Stewart MKcnzio was fined 20s. in default seven days imprisonment, and one first offender was fined 205.. in default twenty-four hxurs imprisonment. > A plea of guilty was rntered by Charles Bonfeld Goddard, for' whom Mr. H. F. O'Leary anpeared, to a charge of obtaining from Charles Arthur Sbriinpton a travelling rug and shirts, a suit of overalls, and two pairs of sooks, value £5. the property of George and Kersley. Ltd., by means false, pretences; also to the charge of obtaining from Hugh M'Carlhy a pair of shoes and a pair of boots valued at £3 16s„ the property of the D.1.0.. by means'of false pretences, with intent to , defraud. On the application of Chief Defective Boddam, sentence was deferred until Wednesday. Some of tho goods had not been recovered. A month's imprisonment was imposed on Jaus Sakons, who pleaded guilty to deserting from an oversea vessel. Turrcll. convicted of having insufficient lights on thcli-motor-cars, were each fined 10s. and costs 7s. ■ , Glen Williams, for driving a horse and vehicle at more than a walking pace round a corner, and for having insufficient light-on his vehicle, was fined 20s. and costs 7s. John Millanta, for having in his i.ossession an unregistered dog, was fined 20s. and costs 17s. 6d. Henry Hume, for a breach of the sanitary by-laws, in respect to houses Nos. 61 and 63 Tinakori Boad.-Vas fined 10s. and 17s. 6d. costs. WANDERING STOCK. For allowing stock to wander, Samuel Howan, Janette M'Nicol, and Walter Q. Eosevear were iach fined 10s. and costs; Maurice J. Hasler, Oswald Disley, and Arthur A. Lcwer were each fined 20s. and costs. John Stewart, an old offender, waß fined £5 and coßts totalling 28s. MILITARY PKOSEOU.TIONS. . Several, Territorials were charged wit.h failing to at,tend drill. Cyril Henry Cooper and Victor Emanuel Grant were convicted and ordered to come up for sentence when called upon; Erie Richmond Ryan was convicted and discharged, a. Kemp and E. J. Kemp were each f.ned 20s. and costs 75., and- the case against Gordon M'Leod was adjourned for a fortnight in order that he may be medically cxr.]£ined by the regimental doctor. Harry Courtney Scarfe, for failing to enrol as a reservist under the Military Servico Act, was convicted and ordered to come up for sentenco when called ui-on. PUKE FOOD OASES. Messrs. Levin Snd, Co., Ltd., for whom Mr. M. Myers appeared, pleaded- guilty to seiling cofiee essence deficient in cuffoine. It was explained by Mr. Myers that tile essence .was imported from Melbourne, aud was sold ' under warranty, such warranty appearing- on the label. There was no blame attached to the defendants, who sold the. goods as they received them. When it was discovered that there was a deficiency in the quantity of caffeine, the manufacturers were written to, and they admitted that through some bungling in the factory a certain quantity of the essence was of inferior quality, and that steps had been takon to prevent a recurrence of this. The defendants were convicted and discharged. For selling milk below the standard required by the Pure Food Act. Felix Mosaic and Edward "Robert Wood were each fined £5 and costs. -JUVENILE COURT. - In the Juvenile Court yesterday, before Mr. S. E. M'Carthy, S.M., a twelve-year-old lad, appeared charged with the theft of a pound of butter. The lad's inordinate, love for swents was the cause of his getting into trouble. Ho was sent to a grocer's shop at. Northland to purchase bacon and butter, for which he was given sufficient money to cover tho cosl. He bought and paid for the bacon, and wlien tho shopman's back was turned .he stole the butter, and used the- money (hat should have been paid for it in br.ying sweets. Ho was severely reprimanded and ordered to come up for sentence when called upon. Two young children whose parents were recently sentenced to six months' imprisonment wore committed to a rivpivinEr home. Another child, whose mother was said to be. in a, rt«lieatc state r-f health, was also crmmittcd lo a receiving home.
