New York, September 21. ■the State Department announces that Count Bernstortt sent the following message to Berlin on January 2-2, 1917—"I request authority to pay up to fifty thousand dollars, in order, as on former occasions, to influence Oc-ngress througii the organisation you know of, whioh can perhaps prevent war. lam beginning m the meantime to act accordingly. AN INVESTIGATION EXPECTED GERMAN CODES SUPPOSED TO BE IN AMERICA'S POSSESSION. New York, .September 21. Congress is expected to begin an investigation as to whether any of its members accepted money from Count Bernstorfl. An enormous sensation has been produced by the revelation of his request to Berlin for money to influence Congress, ; andis strengthening.tho patriotic majority in Congress against ; the small aud querulous minority, which is demanding lengthy debates on all war measures. The incident,' with others of a similar nature, is regarded as a most significant indication that the American Secret Service possesses the German, diplomatic codes, and that the Kaiser can no longer secretly communicate with diplomats abroad—Aus.-N.Z Cable Assn.
