SPACE IN OUTWARD SHIPS

A suggestion.was made to the Minister of Agriculture iu the House of Representatives yesterday by Mr. K Newman that space on outward cargo ships might be : saved if instructions were issued to farm- ; era to increase (lie weight of wool bales. This had been dono in Australia, and it ' was caloulated that 011 the Australian clip ten full cargoes would be saved, mid that the saving in the cost of woolpacks would be JMfl.tiOO. The Minister said that there had bee.n many suggestions for saving space on outward steamers. One was for a special mothod of dressing'carcasses of mutton, and another was that the weight of the carcass should be increased by faniwrs exporting only prime fully-grown sheep. As for wool, he thought mast farmers who had the proper appliances put as much wool as they could into the bale. Many had not the proper appliances, but he thought the high price of woolpacks, from 3s. 6cl. to 4s. each, would be sufficient incentive to farmers to fill them as full as possible. J
