THE LOSS OF THE PORT KEMBLA
The loss of the steamer Pore Kombla, off Farewell Spit will no doubt be the subject of proper inquiry, and the cause of the mysterious explosion which sent the vessel to tho bottom will bo duly investigated. It is not likely that very much light will bo thrown on the matter, but the tragic end of this overseas steamer in our own coastal waters will, we trust, make a deep impression on the Government and the harbour and shipping authorities who control tho handling of cargo at our ports. Until ? urther particulars aro available it is not possible to express a confident opinion as to the origin of this disaster, but the circumstances under which it occurred will serve to cmphasiso tho necessity for the utmost caro boing exorcised in tho employment of labour on tho waterfront and in tho acceptance of oargo and goods for shipmont overseas. This happening is bound to give rise to further uneasiness as to enemy aliens at large in the Dominion, concerning which there is a much more general dissatisfaction than tho Government perhaps realises.
