HEMP PRICES

The Invercargill representatives have returned from a conference in Wellington attended by sixty to seventy millers and merchants connected with the hemp ( industry. The meeting was addressed by the Prime Minister and the Hon. V?: D. S. Mac Donald. The latter Baid that the Imperial Government had fixed prices at which Now Zealand hemp could l)e sold in London after September 15 as follows:—Good fair, .£B3; high grade, .£81; fair, ,£BO. Some deals were waiting explanation on certain points, such as -whether the prices included war risk, or whether they were c.i.f., or landed in London. It was decided to ask the Government to cable for more definite information. , As the maximum price for fair current Manila has been fixed at .£BS, millers and merchants felt they could not. object to tho New Zealand prices fixed. It was decided to ask the Government for a guarantee of shipping space for 7500 bales monthly. The maximum prices fixed by the Im- . perial Government represent a drop ot iEIO to J312 a ton on the prices previously ruling in London, which market will now only return to millers from .£53 to £5$ f.0.b., according to whether the war risk is included or not.
