Mr. Peter Oliphant, solicitor, of Auckland, has received advice tliat his son, Lieutenant James Oliphant, has been awarded the Military Cross. Lieutenant Oliphant left with the Main Body, holding the rank of f ergeant. Oα his arrival in Egypt he obtained a commission in the First King's Own Scottish Borderers, and was later sent to Trance, where he has been ever since. Prior to enlisting Lieutenant Oliphant was practising as a solicitor at To Awamutu. Mr C. 31. Luke received cabled f.dvict last evening that his son, Lieutenant Kenneth E. Luke, who has been at the front is at present in hospital, l>o other particulars have yet to come to hand, Gunner J. T. Kent, of Reikiorangi, received a presentation last evening, as a tokon of eeteem, from tho members of D Battery Reserve, on the occasion of his retirement from the field section ot.tne It NZ A, to carry on the work of his farm. Captain Goldie made the presentation. Mr. William Pryor, secretary of the New Zealand Employers' Federation lias returned to Wellington from Auckland, where he went to meet his eon, who iias returned wounded from the front. Mr C. M. Luke, who presided at the meeting of the Central Chamber of Commerce yesterday, was congratulated on his recovery from a recent attack ot bronchitis. Mr. Edward Green, an old resident of Masterton, died on Sunday at tho ape of eighty-seven years. Ho was tne nrst hotelkeeper at : Eketahuna. Mr. William Job Smith, who lias been resident in Masterton for ever thirty years, died on Saturday last.
