SUPREME COURT

PRISONERS SENTENCED Tho Chief Justice, Sir Robert Stout, sentenced several prisoners in the Supreme Court on Saturday. Mr. l>. S. K. Macassey appeared for the Orown. Herbert William Gough, a young man ■who had been found guilty of sending a, threatening lottcr to a woman to demand money from her, was the first offender dealt -with. Mr. P. \V. Jackson, on behalf of tho. prisoner, reminded His Honour of the jury's recommendation to mercy. Another charge pending against the prisoner was mentioned, and Mr. Macassoy informed the Court that because of tho continued sickness of a witness the hearing could not yet bo proceeded with. Hie, Honour remanded the prisoner until 9.30 a.m. tomorrow. In tho meantime, the gaol surgeon will' furnish a report. Henry Williams had ploadcd guilty in the Magistrate's Court to charges of forging and uttering, and breaking, entering, and stealing. He had also been convicted in the Supremo Court on a, chase of forging and uttering. His Honour did not iraposo a longer term -on the laskmcntioncd conviction than tho two years' reformative detention tho prisoner was already serving. Frederick Ellis, alias Ruslinp, was sentenced to aii months' imprisonment with hard labour for forging and uttering a cheque at Bawera. His Honour rriado an order that tho sentence should be concurrent with ono of three months' imprisonment which was imposed for .false pretences.
