"CLEARING-HOUSE" LOAN
Sir-One peculiarity about officialism in all matters of milk is that the truth' seldom suits, and always has.to he refitted. The public of Wellington are not to have any say in the milk question, because, going: to a poll, one man, might control the vote, and they von fl not like one man to control the milK of .Wellington. The actual truth is that one Tote, nUnouglv a majority rote, does not exercise the controlling influence, nnd very much less so when tho vote is unconscious of its position and possibilities, as is the case when a poll of the ratepayers is taken. Another truth is that one is to be appointed w control the milk of Wellington, and that man a stranger. Another, and tn.oro vital truth, is that the council know thev have so far failed to win public confidence on the milk question, and fear to put the decision in .the hands of those most entitled to it. As to the clearinghouse" itself. GO by 20 is to a. clearing, houso as G by 2 to a- nian-ft funeral. As an initial step to get over eome or the disabilities which are at present helping to make a shortage of supplies it will bp well worth the expense A* a. testing-house it will be only a halfmeasure, ajid a half-measure in a. mattef of this sort mil prove a delusion ana worse than a snare.—l am, etc., HENRY BODLET.
