MASTER STROWAN'S STEEPLECHASE, ICEJSI3HQ WINS DIG. HANDICAP. (B.v Telegraph—Special Correspondent.! Marton, September 5. The spring meeting ot the .Marlon Hailing Club was held to-day. There was a rccord attendance, but the going vas heavy. The totalisator handled £22,184, against £17,765 on the first day of last year's meeting. . A heavy shower fell when the horseh paraded lor the first race, and the start., was delayed. Swinton was a solid favourite, while several of the others came in ,I'or strong- support. At the start, Gay Guard stumbled and nearly lost his rider. The lirst ienee brought hiin down, also My Pat. l'ostillion led up to the straight, bul lie was done with at the six furlongs, and Colorado took charge on the home bend. Mattock challenged and headed him at the last fenco, winning nicely by a length from Colorado. Swinton, whose rider lost an iron, came fast at tbb finish. Combustion, T'atinii, and Yarilla were the next, with the leniainder strung out. The Karamu representative was the public fancy in the Trial Stakes, but ho 'was never in front, and scorned unable to act in the going. Tonukoho was the quickcßt to begin, and led Coolpnn and Matilda Into the straight. Here Rude took chnrgo and won easily. Siguorjella finished fast and beat Coolpan. Matilda was fourth and Little Ann fifth. The three placed Horses were ridden by I'ordoll jockeys. Bodenham and Union Tack were tile best backed in tho Hack Steeples, but an outsider in Coalition, vigorously ridden by R. M'Sevcney, won easily at the finish from the favourite, who seemed unable to act in the going. Aratlatia made play for a riiile, but he was then done with. Sabrenui and Merry ,<uck were together in front at the six furlongs, but both ran off. Bodcnlmm was then loft in charge, but Coalition beat him easily in tha run to the post. The top weight earned the most money in a good betting event in the big Handicap. After tho start, which was a perfect one, Crawford, Detroit, and Lady Louisa took up the running. At the six furlongs Orleans had pulled himself to 'the front, lie was in" trouble at the home turn, where Crawford headed him. Iceberg finished fast, and, staying on, beat Lady Louisa, who is coming back to form. Detroit and Orleans finished just behind the placed Horses. .In the KangitiKei Steeplechase Master Strowan was allowed to pay a fair price. On account or the heavy stale of the going ho was ridden m behind, and, catching Kurapai tit the last fenco, he ran on and beat him nicely. Collector was a poor tStrd, and then came Nita, Sandy l'aul, and Marton. There was a very big field in tho Elcctric Handicap, and half-a-dozen of thp runners were well backed. Acre was tbti favourite, hut only £3 separated him \roni I'ergola. Then camo Impediment, Silver Tongue, and Polynesian, all of whom wcro evenly hacked. At the start Acre ran to the. front, followed by Impediment, Polynesian, and Silver Tongue. The Fordcll representative was douc with at the turn, where (iaycium and Vladieau becamo ;promiitent.
