THE BLOW AT RIGA
MOVE ON PETROGRAD DISCUSSED • AN INTERESTING OPINION NEW GROUND GAINED The Russians have been forced to further retirements on their Kiga front. With the Germans now across the Dwina, the enemy's objective is being discussed. The suggestion that Petrograd is the aim is scouted by Colonel Shumsky,' tho "Bourse Gazette" war expert, who gives reasons for what he considers the impossibility of sucli an achievement so late in tho European autumn. The Russians have scored a J-aval 6UCCCOSS in the Black Sea. In the West, the Canadians have again scored at Lens, forcing the enemy back over a considerable depth. The usual raids and artillery duels are in progress elsewhere along this front, with destructive work by the airmen above the field. No material developments are reported from the Italian front, beyond a damaging air raid on the harbour works at Pola (tho Austrian base). It is reported that an Allied offensive in the Balkans—a hint of which appeared two days ago—has been opened as a. diversion calculated to pin down the Bulgars to their own front, in order to prevent them sending reinforcements elsewhere, and also relieve the pressure on the Moldavian, front. President Wileon, in a Note setting forth America's peace essential, has created a profound sensation in Vienna.
