The Base Records Office has,been advised that Captain Bernard Charles Tennant,, R.A.M.C., a New Zealander, has been awarded the Military Cross for-gal-lantry in tho, field of The'address of the next-of-kin is not available here. News of tho death of Sir Thomas Roydon, Bart., one of Liverpool's most prominent men, at one time Lord Mayor of that city, was received by cablegram yesterday. Sir Thomas Royden was head of the "lndra" line of. steamers, the Australasia branch of which has been ; recently merged in the Cunard Line. His grandson is Mr. J. R. Rooper, Now Zealand manager of the Cunard Company (Australasian service).
Mr. D. W. Mason, deputy registrar of tho Supreme Court at Dunedin, and clork of awards under the Conciliation and Arbitration Act, has resigned his position in .the Government service. Ho will bo replaced by Mr. F. Knight, deputy-registrar at Invercargill. Mr. Mason, who is a solicitor, intends following his .profession in the .North Island. Tho following resolution was passed at a meeting held last evening of the officebeavers of Kent Terrace Presbyterian Church:—"The office-bearers of Kent Terrace Presbyterian Church, having heard of the death of Captain Robert Strang, take the earliest opportunity to express their profound sorrow at the loss of an old and valued friend. They assure the widow and family of their heartfelt sympathy, end fervently pray that the relations may be sustained in their bereavement by the consolations of Divino grace'and tho realisation of the presence of that , compassionate God Who, never far from us, is never so near us as when in trouble we need Him most; As elders ah:l deacons we desire also to put |on record our appreciation of tho character.of our departed brother and our grateful acknowledgment of tho important services lie' rendered to our congregation, i He was for , many years an elder, was session clerk, and also a Sunday School teacher, and in these offices faithfully discharged all tho duties that devolved npon.him. He was also a generous supporter of all our efforts. He was a respected anil useful citizen, and was universally held ,in esteem by tho community.. Ho was a man of high principles, at great integrity, courteous in manner, and kindly in disposition." In moving tho resolution Mr. W. M. Hannay spoke feelingly of tho loss sustained by the death of Captain Strang.. Mr. William Millar seconded the motion, and as a mark of respect the office-bearers remained standing for a short space of time. Tho session clerk was directed to forward a copy of tho minute to Mrs. Strang and family,

Information has been received to the effect that Lieutenant Spencer G. Smith, who left New Zealand in September last with the Seventeenth Reinforcements, was gazottcd as captain, and has been appointed one of the instructors to the Second Army Corps. Captain Smith is tile youngest son' of Mr. S. G. Smith, of the Government Life Insurance Department, Dunedin.
A Press Association telegram from New; Plymouth announces the death uf Mr. Charles Maxwell Lcpper, chairman of the Hospital Board, with which he had been connected for very many years. Ho also was for several years chairman of the. Taranaki Jockey Club Committee.
