An urgent appeal far help from Auckland came before the House of Representatives yesterday afternoon. It was from a woman with four sons at the front, who had the bailiffs in her house. She sent the following telegram to Mr. Glovers-
Can you get assistance from Defence Department re my claim ? Bailill's in possession. Claim for rent ,£8 9s. Reply urgent. I have four tons at the front. Mr. Glover said the woman's husband was in very indifferent health.
He went'on to say: "What are you going to do in a case like that? Something should be done to come to the rescue, because I have known the same individual to take away the bed from under the people and the piano from the This woman has given four sons to the war, and the bailiffs were put in possession for £$. Surely the Defence Department will come to the rescue of this woman." Mr. Sykes: It is a disgrace to the city. A member: "Who is the landlord? Put his name on record.
Mr. Glover: No. Mr. Payne:. Does it commence with Mr'. Clover: Yes.' It is Mr. Hannan. This is a case that claims consideration and probably the Defence Minister will direct me how to send a reply. _ Mr. Sykes: Submit it to the Patriotic Society. . , ~ Mr. Glover: The Patriotic Society has done very well, but that is only a precautionary expedient. I will now go to the Defence Minister to see if,the Defence Department cannot do something until the allotment comes next month. Mr. Glover subsequently interviewed the Minister of Defence, who gave sympathetic consideration to the appeal, and provided him with ■ application . forms which would ensure that the matter would be attended to by the Defence Department. Mr. Glover lias sent a telegrain to the mother of the four soldiers advising her to apply to the Patriotic Society at. once, and assuring her that trio society would give her temporary relief.
