Mr. E. W. Smith, M.P., who has been for some weeks recovering from a sharp attack of appondicitis, was able to take hie seat in the House of Representatives again yesterday.
Captain J. S. Faircliild, who left New Zealand with tho Main Body on tho staff of the New Zealand Medical Corps, and has seen, servico in Egypt, Gallipoli, and Sinai, is at present in Auckland. Hβ is accompanied by Mrs. Fairchild, who has been engaged? in Eed Cross work at Salonika with a Canadian ambulance detachment. Captain Faircliild will report at Headquarters for duty in New Zealand.
A Press Association telegram from Auckland states that Mr. It. M. Hockett, night editor of tho "New Zealand Herald," has been appointed editor of that journal.
Major J. P. D. Leahy, N.Z.M.C, will undertake the duties of principal medical officer at Trentham Camp during tho absence of Lieutenant-Colonel Andrew.
Mr. R. Fletcher, M.P., who has been ill for t»mo weeks, took his place again in tho House of Representatives yesterday.
A cablegram line been received that W. Oxenham, of the Twenty-eeveuth Specialists, late of the Land ond, Income Tax Department, Wellington, has arrived in England.
Trooper John Trotter, 6eoond son of Mr. W. Trotter, Bangiora, has been awarded the Military Jtedal for rescuing wounded -under fire. Trooper Trotter is a member of the Sixth Reinforcement.
Trooper C. P. Hanson, of Waiouru Station, is now an. inmate of Thorndou Trivate Hospital, an old internal complaint necessitating an immediate operation.
Mr. Walter Pavitt, Auckland manager of the Royal Insurance Company, is to take over the Wellington branch of the company during the absence on active service of Mr. B. Cook. . Mr. A. C. Baker will act as manager at Auckland during Mr. Pavitt's absence.
Mr. Ernest Livermore, deputy-regis-trar and permit officer, and registrar of the electors for Auckland' West, died on Friday. Mr. Livermore, who was 55 years of age, was born in England, and .later went to India, where he_ became a tea-planter. He was a major in the Indian Militia. He lived m Wellington for several years before going_ to Auckland, where he held office for e'.ght years. Private W. E. M'Minn, who left Ashburton with an early reinforcement, has been promoted to lieutenant. Ho proceeded to Samoa on the outbreak of ivar, and on his Teturn enlisted for active service.
The Rev. James Baird received intimation last week that the French. Government had conferred on his eldest son, Dr. W. S. Baird, its Medal of Distinction in appreciation of his services in Ranee. After an absence of over two years, Dr. Baird returned to the Dominion in January last. A month later, at tho request of tho Government, he accepted an appointment inder tho Sarooan Administration, whore he is now engaged on eye surgery, having studied this subject at Moorfield's Opthalmio Hospital, London.
