The Pctono Borough Council met last; evening. Tho Mayor, Mr. J. W. M'Ewun, presided. - . Tho Christchurch employers wrote protesting against the' action of the council in-offering; through tho Christchurch papers, threepence per hour more than the award rate to .plumbers. It was decided that too council should not move in the- matter. The council supported the suggestion of tho Hokitika Council that one day in the year bo sot aside as one of national prayer. . Councillor Cox moved that the Government bo asked to provide more platform shelter at tho Petone Railway Station. Tho motion was carried. . Councillor M.'Koiisiie moved as follows: .—"That owing . to. the continued high cost of the necessaries of life, and the still advancing prices of foodstuffs, the Government be requested to open a retail butcher's, shop at Potono similar to that opened in Auckland, in order that tho people : may-be enabled to obtain meat at reasonable, prices." The council considered that tho patter should bo held over till further information was available. Councillor M'Kcnzie agreed. It was decided to levy Uio following rates for the year 1917-18':—Over the wholo borough, a general rate of 2jd. in the £,; separate and special rate totalling I 15-6-kl. in the £~ where annual value does not exceed .£l2 10s.; a water 1 rato of.'Cs. Cd., where value exceeds J3ia 10s., a rate of 2J- per cent., and one-lialf of the B'.viil water, rates on all lands and buildings to which water can be, but is not, supplied, situate within 100 yards' of any part of tho water works, arid an all 'buildings used as stores or warehouses or for purposes other than dwellings; over tho ' Petono eastern spocial rating area, special rates totalling 1 35-5Sd. iu tho £.
