There is splendid news to-day from the Western and Italian theatres. • The Italians have captuscS the summit of llonte Santo, a mountain stronghold four miles njfrth of Gorizia, and in the 60uth they are '' making continued headway on tho Oarso Plateau, in spito of the enemy's desperate resistance. I(j is stated that the garrison of Hermada, the formidable stronghold which covers the route to Trieste, is isolated "by artillery fire, and has teen' without food and waiter for five days. By a brilliant dash on the Western front, west of the Meuse, the French have made an important addition to their recont successes in that quarter. Hill SOI was carried at a single rush. In places the French have advanced beyond the line on which they were attacked in the Seoond Battle of Verdun, in May last year. The titanic 'struggle on the British front , continues without sign of abatement. It is stated that Mackensen's attempts to encompass the Ruminiansns in Moldavia have definitely failed. Another political crisisihns arisen in Germany, over a difference between the Chancellor and the Majority group tho Reichstag. As an outcome the Chancellor, it is said, has accepted the Reichstag's peace formula and announced that he favours closer co-operation between the. Government and the political parties.
