THE SALONIKA FIRE
ENORMOUS LOSS ALLIED ARMY PROVIDING FOR THE DESTITUTE Salonika, August 23. The fire was awe-inspiring. An avenue of flame a mile wide devoured everything in its course. Tho entire business quarter on the seafront was destroyed, and the loss is enormous. The insurance is estimated at between two and three millions sterling. The Allied troops gave the utmost assistance, though Ho scarcity of water was a tremendous drawback. Each .Allied army is providing for 'the destitute. the British alone tending 30,000. August 25, 1.10 a.m.) Salonika, August 2i. A remarkable feature of the great fire was that it started in several places simultaneously. Fresh outbreaks constant-' ly occurred as others were tackled. Half the city was blazing within two hours. The terrified refugees fled from quarter to quarter, vainly seeking safety as the flames spread. German, aeroplane bombs increastd their terror. When the seafront was readied holocaust seemed likely, but the British naval men too'i off the huddled crowds, and army motor lorries evacuated thousands by road.—Aus.-N.Z, Cable Assn.
