OPTIMISTIC REVIEW OF THE :••'■ SITUATION Tremendous battles continue both in the Western, theatre and on the Italian front, and further important successes by the Allies are reported to-day. The French have rounded off their brilliant offensive at Verdun .with nearly 8000 unbounded prisoners, in hand. . The British are methodically developing their terrifio assault on the enemy'.-i northern "... line, and have gained further ground on the Lens battlefront. The Italians are rapidly expanding the great success already won on' tho Isonzo front. News from Kumania shows that the Allies are holding their own in that theatre, but the enemy has won a local success on the northern-pari of the main East front,.'capturing positions south-west of Riga. A number of to-day's messages show that the Allies are conoen- '! trating. upon measures of assistance to Euesia, and also that the Provi- i sional,Government is making organised efforts to place the government - ! of the.country on a.more stable footing.
