TWO AIR RAIDS ON ENGLAND

The Press Bureau, states: "Ten of the enemy's aeroplanes approached Kent, near R-amegate, at 10 o'clock in the morning. _ The flying Corps and Naval Air Service met and heavily engaged the raiders, preventing them penetrating inland. A small party of raiders flew to Margate and then turned homeward; the remainder skirted the coast southward to Dover. Bombs were dropped at Dover and Margate. Three people were killed and two injured. Slight damage was dono. Our anti-aircraft gunfire brought dowji two of the raiders. Enemy airships appeared off the Yorkshire coast last night. One attacked the month of tlio Humber and dropped bombs, and then went out to sea. The | anti-aircraft guns opened fire. Slight | damage was done, and one man was in-jured.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Asan. SHARP BATTLE IN THE AIR. (Rec. August 23,11.5 p.m.) London, August 23. When the raiders were approaching Margate;, at a great altitude, the British aircraft guns opened fire upon' them. Two fled headlong. An incessant battle in the air continued for half an hour. In connection. with the raid on the Yorkshire coast last night the searchlights along the Huimber caught a Zeppelin flying at a height of two miles. Gunfire prevented the visitor from reaching its objective. It dropped a number, of bombs before disappearing.—Aus.N.Z. Cable Assn. FURTHER OFFICIAL DETAILS. (Rec. August 23, 11.5 p.m.)' London, August 22-. Official: "The raiders dropped bombs on Dover, Margate, and Ranisgato. Eleven people were killed and thirteen injured at Dover and Ramsgato, while a number of houses and a hospital were damaged. One of the enemy's pilots was rescued, injured." Another official message states: "One, or, at most, two. airships which' were raiding the Yorkshire coast last night ventured overland and dropped shells on three villages near the coast, -wrecking a chapel and damaging houses. . The Admiralty reports: "Naval aeroplanes attacked ten German Gotha planes in the vicinity of Ramsgato at a height of 11,000 feet, and shot down one, in addition to the two already reported, and chased the remainder to sea.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. RAIDERS MET AND FOUGHT ON BELGIAN COAST " .. FIVE DRIVEN DOWN. (Rec. August 24, 0.5 a.m.) London, August 23. The Admiralty reports:—"Three machines from Dunkirk indecisively engaged twelvo Gothas thirty-five miles northward of Nieuport, and chased them to Zeobrugge. Another patrol of ten' machines engaged twehty-nve of the enemy's escorting scouts. Awaiting the raiders from England, they drove down at least fivo completely out of control.
