PROLONGED HAND-TO-HAND STRUGGLE
CANADIANS GAINING GROUND •.. NEW BRITISH SUCCESS ON > • MES'FRONT ITALIAN. VICTORY OVER 13,000 PRISONERS TO DATE The Canadians at Lens are fighting a Soldiers' battle—man to man, in the good old British way—and holding thoir own. Tho desperate nature of this personal contest puts frightful methods of warfare out of'the question, owing to the danger of hurting friend as well as foe. To tho ' north, in Flanders, the British have gained fresh successes on the YpresMenin Bond. On tho Mouse, tho French have maintained themselves • against very heavy counter-attacks in their new positions. The 'Italians continue to advance along their whole front, and the number of prisoners has reached well over 13,000. Glowing dispatchos from correspondents depict the battle as, an intense clash of determined forces, but leave no doubt as'to which is superior. The Italians are masters of tho air, which places the Austrian artillery at a serious disadvantage. Tho situ- • ation on the Bussian front discloses no material .change, beyond a recrudescence of activity on tho Riga front.
