THE MILK SUPPLY
CLEARING-HOUSE AT THORNDON. At last evening's meeting of the City Council; tho Mayor (Mr. J. F. Luke) announced that they had been successful in obtaining tho tiso of a* piece of land near the Thorndon Railway Station to bo used, as a site for a temporary clearinghouse for receiving and testing the milk. The site was that piece of vacant railway land at the back of Banks, Ltd's, factory (near the tramway right-of-way). The site was a section COft. by 25ft., which would provide, sufficient space for tho receiving of the milk and the apparatus for cleansing the cans. Towards the cost the Dairy Farmers' Association would contribute, and they would also pay the salary of a Government inspector. The administrative cost of tho scheme would have to be met }>y a small tax tto be paid on every gallon of milk that goes through tho clearing-house. He thought the public would hear that, as they in any ease would have to do when thev had the permanent clearing-house. When asked as to what rent they would have to pay, the Mayor said that he had been informed that they could have it at a peppercorn rental. The council approved the suggestion, and the Engineer is to push on with the work at the earliest opportunity.
