ILLEGAL BETTING
THE POLICE AND BOOKMAKERS. A very direct question was asked in tho House ol' .Representatives lust week by Sir. JA. A. Wright regarding tho jperutions of certain well-known bookmakers in. Wellington, and suggesting that the police siiouid tako cli'emive steps to repress them.
The Attorney-General (the Hon. A. L. Herdman) made the following reply to Die question yesterday:—The police havo instructions to take all possible i-teps to suppress illegal betting in the Dominion. Considerable difficulty, howev.w, exists in obtaining evidence sufficient to prosecute those persons who aro believed to be operating as bookmakers in Wellington and other places, ns the bulk of then- betting transactions is done under assumed names by correspondence. The Police Department has drawn the attention of tlio Post and Telegraph authorities to the use made by bookmakers of the post and telegraph services, and regulations to more effectively deal with suspected persons are under consideration. Several successful prosecutions have lately been brought by the police against persons betting in hotels, and tho honourable gentleman can be assured that every effort will continue tobe made by the Department to detect offenders."
