POLICE AND BY-LAW OASES. Mr. S. E. M'Oarthy, S.M., presided at the Magistrate's Court yesterday. Goorgo Andrew Harton, who was found helplessly drunk in Lambton Quay, was oonvictcd and ordered to pay medical expenses. Arthur Sheriff, found in a similar condition in Willis Street, was fined 205., in default 48 hours' imprisonment. A. sentenco of three months' imprisonment was imposed on Annabella Swnnson for drunkenness, she being an old offender. Three first offenders were leniently dealt Thomas O'Brien was fined 10s., in default 24 hours' imprisonment, and on a charge of stealing a lady's costume, value £4, ho was remanded for a week. iAn elderly man named Walter brniui, who was arrested within tho precincts of Parliament on Thursday, was charged -with assaulting Nicholas Bradanovich. at Auckland, and on the application of Chief Detoctivo Boddam was remanded to appear at Auckland on August 15. For threatening behaviour in Lambton Quay two seamen named George Barnes and John Hallgran wero fined 40s. each, in default seven days' imprisonment, and ordered to be placcjl on board their vessel. . , Frank Hunt, a reservist, who appeared in uniform, was charged with assuming tho name ol A. Brown without permission. Ho was convicted and ordered to be handed over to the military authorities. For failing to attend drill, F. R, Guy and C. Polo (Hutt) were each fined £3, mdefault 21 days' military detention, and Ronald M'Donald, employed in the Telegraph Department, was fined £5, m default S3 days' military detention. THE TRAFFIC BY-LAWS. For having an insufficient light on hi 3 motor-car John Barker was fined 20s. arid costs; on a similar charge Patrick Murphy was fined 40s. and costs, and Samuel Turner 10s. and costs. Lan Duncan, for driving his motor-oar on the Wrong side of the road, -was fined 10s. and costs. John Henry Thompson, oharged with driving his motor-car round the corner of Willis Street into Manners Street at more than six miles an hour, pleaded not guilty. After hearing the evidence the Magistrate entered a conviction, and fined defendant 40s. and costs , , John Reginald Welsby was fined £2 and ordered to pay costs for allowing horses to wander in tho Karori Borc-ugh. LICENSEE IN COURT.
Percy Rogers, licensee of the To Aro Hotel, for whom Mr. T. Young appeared, was charged with permitting drunkenness on his licensed premises. According to the evidence, Sergeant Wtlcocks and a constable, in making a round of the hotels on the night of July 17, visited the lo Aro Hotel. They had previously been in the Albert Hotel, and on coming out of that hotel they had the Te Aro Hotel In view, and could sec anyone going in or coming out of the hotel. When the police got into the bar of the Te Aro Hotel they saw a drunken seaman standing at tho counter with a not of beer alongside of him. The attention of the barman •was called to the condition of the man, and tho latter was ordered to leave, but lie was too drunk to comply with tho order. He was put out by the scrgoant, and before going out made a grab' for the pot of beer. The defence was that tho man came into the bar about five or six minutes before the police, eamo in, and was not served with drink. Several witnesses were called for the defence. _ The Magistrate, in grant; judgment, reviewed the evidence at length, and came to the conclusion that defendant must be convicted. A fine of £5 was imposed, and nt the request of Mr. Young this was increased to £5 Is. 1o allow of an appeal. Security for appeal was fixed at £10.
