FRESH SOCIALIST DEMAND
COUNTER-MOVE BY THE PROFESSORS Amsterdam, August 8. Herr Schcidemaim (Socialist Majority leader), addressing a gathering of 6000 at Mannheim, demanded in the interests of peace tho speedy creation of a Government really representing tho people's will. Speaking at Augsberg, Herr Fehrenbach, tho mover of the peuce resolution in the Keichstag on July 20, admitted that tho political leaders concocted the resolution at Herr Scheideniann's suggestion, in order to enable tho Socialists to reassuro their constituents and vote for tho war credits—Aus.-N.Z. [The peace formula of tho Majority of the Bcichstag, which was adopted, is as follows:—(1) Germany is fighting for freedom, independence, and the maintenance of her territory. (2) Tho Ecichstng desires a lasting peaco secured en the Rood understanding of all people. The forced acquisition, of territory, political, economic, and financial disabilities are inconsistent with such a peaco. (3) The Reichstag protests against all plans for economic blockades, and demands freedom of tho Beas after the war.' It advocates tho establishment of an International Court, (i) Whilst enemy Governments do not accept such a peace tho Gorman people unanimously agree to continuo the fight.]

MASS MEETING OF MINERS DECURE FOR PEACE. (Rcc. August 19/0.30 a.m.) Amsterdam, August 9. A mass meeting of eight thousand miners at Essen, held to discuss the food and wages questions, developed into a demonstration in favour of peace. It was resolved to demand that tho Reichstag should vigorously push a resolution to this effect.—Renter.
