AURORA AUSTRALIS
VISIBLE LAST EVENING. "What was the firo to-night?" asked an anxious voice over The Dominion telephone last evening. "In which direction?" was asked. "Away to tho south—beyond Newtown: somewhere," came the answer. The inquirer was informed that it wa9 a display of the Aurora Australis. It lasted from about 5.d0 p.m. to 6.30 p.m., taking the form of a dull reddish giow which spread across tho southern Heavcus in a fairly high arc. Now and again an orango-coloured shaft of light was thrown out from the arc in flashes that wera never long sustained. In oonnection with this display it is mentioned with interest that suoh displays have some affinity with the presence of abnormally largo 6un spots, such as the one which has been picked up b.v local astronomers. That waa mentioned to a Dominion reporter by' Mr. G. V. Hudson on Wednesday, when he remarked that there was an affinity betwsen such solar phenomena and tho . earth, s magnetio poles. He then stated that it was not unlikely that if tho meteorological conditions were suitable displays ot the Auroras were not unlikely. A Press Association telegram from Wanganui states that a beautiful display of the Aurora Australis was witnessed there in tho early hours of yesterday evening.
