MASTERTON NOTES
A considerable quantity of general cargo, other than meat, is at present stored at the Waingawa freezing works. Mr. J. C. Cooper expressed the opinion at tho annual meeting of the Wellington Farmers' Meat Company on Wednesday, that the closing down of tho fellinougery works by the Government was ■quite unnecessary. It meant a reduction of from .£2OO to ,£3OO per week in wages as far as the Waingawa works were concerned. Colonel Cossgrove, the Chief Scout of New Zealand, intends holding a conference, of Boy Scouts at, Masterton at an early date. It is reported that damage to the extent of .£IOO was done in a store at Alfredton as a result of Monday's earthquake. At a meeting of the Masterton branch of the Plunket Society, Nurse" Hancock :reported nineteen new infants on her books at Masterton, and twelve at Fea-thc-rston. The meeting placed on record the excellent work done by Nurso Hancock during the three months she has been in the district. At the annual meeting of the Masterton Park Bowling Club, Mr. R. J. Southgato was elected president, Mr. E. A. Stanisforth vice-president, and Mr. E. Bell secretary. Seven new members were elected. Some discussion took place at tho meeting of tho Wellington Farmers' Meat Company iu Masterton on Wednesday on tho operations of tho Meat Trust. Ono shareholder urged that the Government should not only commandeer meat at this end, but should commandeer the means of distribution at the other end. He moved that a deputation bo appointed to wait upon the Government on the subject. The chairman pointed out that any resolution at this stage might embarrass the Government. The , resolution, on being put to tlie meeting, was negatived. The Military Service Appeal Board will sit at Masterton on August 16. Mr. 0. C. Cooper urged at the meeting of shareholders of tho Wellington Farmers' Meat Company on Wednesday that steps should bo taken to harness the river waters in the district, not only with a view to supplying cheap motive power, but in order to convert the nitrogen in the air into manure. Between tour and five hundred soldiers from the Featherstnn Camp were entertained at an "Inglesidc" by the Wairarana Caledonian Society in the Masterton Municipal Hall on Wednesday evening.
