Palestine of the Future,

Christendom and Islam alike have tho deepest interest in tho Holy Places of Palestine, aud their rights must and will be secured to them in the fullest measure that is necessary. But this interest is a religions, not a national, interest. A little whilo ago a distinguished geographer proposed that Palestine should be converted into a kind of vast archaeological ' lnu, senm for Christians, in the conditions of life of the first century should be restored anil artificially maintained. A tendency to look upon Palestine with that kind of eye, though not expressed quite so extravagantly and candidly, is not limited to one geographer. It is forgotten that it was neither an artificial nor a petrified Palestine which gave religious inspiration to the world, but that the Zion from which the Law came forth was the natural home of the living Jew T ish people. The Jews are the only people of whom Palestine is tho national home and centre.

For the moment it is not necessary to indicate in detail fhe precise political conditions nnder which in the Doomsday of the world tho Jewish Palestine shall be completed. But two guiding principles must be set down. The first is expressed in the maxim that thero must be no partition of Palestine. The Powers must not. to satisfy' the Imperialist, ambition or that Imperialist appetite, or, to spare a diplomatist a headache, anatomise the living body of Palestine as they anatomised the living body of Poland. Such crimes avenge themselves, as mailkind in its torment knows. The second principle is that thero must be no condominium over Palestine—that is. no division of sovereignty over Palestine between two or more Powers each of which desires and pursues tho acquisition _ cf Tire whole sovereignty. A condominium is a device of diplomatists, moved primarily by Imperialist considerations, for passing on their difficulties to their successors. All experience teaches that such "compromises," while they last, mean dcs"'M:ion to the pcoolo and the territory siftjfcct to the condominium. The political foundations of the Jewish Palestino of the future must be determined by the lfght of national right.
