PETONE BOROUGH

MEETING COUNCIL. The fortnightly meeting of Hie Petono Borough Council was held last evening, the Mayor (Sir. J. W. Jl'Ewnn) presiding. There were- al-o present Council-, lore C. P. Brocklebank, AV. Cox, J. Churchhouse, J. Foster, S. Newlands. .f. Jl'Dougall, I). M'Kenzie, R. JI. Joues, and E. Tove.y. Before dealing with the ordinary business ttio council considered, '"i'iie Heavy and Exceptional and Other Traffic Bylaws," tho clauses of which hnd been drawn up by of the council. There are ninety-nine clauses in the by-law, which provides among other restrictions that "traction engines or motor-wagons shall travel only such streets without the borough and between such hours as shall be from time to time notified by the council." A traction engine will not be allowed to travel through the borough if it <xeeeds 11 tons in weight. Wheels-must all have smooth tyres. The license for a motorwagon or motor vehicle is fixed at .El per ton capacity, with a maximum of .£10; for a traction engine ,£25, and for a, motor omnibus having a seating capacity of not more than twenty passengers £h, and above that number .C 7 10s. The by-law as drafted was passed and will conio up for confirmation at the noxt meeting of the council. A letter waa received from the Prime Minister in reply to a communication from the council stating that the i|ucstion of the reduction in the suburban train service- was receiving careful consideration, and that the council's viows would be placed before Cabinet when the matter was being dealt with. . With reupect to providing a frre lavatory for ladies at the Lambton Railway Station, the General Manager of Kailways (Mr. E. H. Hiley) stated that the qiieistiou wa3 receiving attention. It was resolved to hold nn opeo-air meeting of citizens on August 4, the anniversary of' the declaration of war, for tho purpose of passins the resolution submitted to local bodies throughout the Dominion by tho Government. Tho Postmaster-General (Sir JosephWard) wrote regretting that it was out of the question to' give eli'eet to the council's request-that.letters and parcels be forwarded to soldiers and sailors on active service free of charge.
