The Hon. A. L. Herdman arrived from the south by the Maori yesterday morning. Major Waite. D.5.0., arrived from the south by the Maori yesterday. Mr. R. Fletcher, M.P., has been seriousiv ill recently, but he is reported to bo recovering slowly. He is still confined to his room. We regret to announce the death of Mr. Herbert A. Kirkcaldie, second son of Mr. John Kirkcaldie, head of the firm of Kirkcaldie and Stains, Ltd, The late Mr. Kirkcaldie had been Buffering from an attack of influenza, and had felt so far recovered that ho v returned to business, but, apparently, this was too premature, as he was taken ill again, and pleurisy set in. From this attack he did not recover, and he died on Saturday at his residence at Khandallali, at the of i'l Tho late Mr. Kirkcaldie was bom in Wellington, and educated at Wellington and Wangamii Colleges, nis scholastic education completed, he entered the firm of Kirkcaldie and Stains, Ltd., and was its secretary and also a partner at tho timo of his death. Jhe late Mr. Kirkcaldie is survived by his wife (who is a daughter of Mr. Anthony Stubbs, formerly of the Railway Department) and three sons and a daughter. Mr. Kirkcaldie had made many friends within and without, the firm, and was generally regarded as a business man of great ability. A. cablegram was received on Saturday from London announcing that Sergeant Alonzo Dwan. ofi the. 3rd Rifle Brigade, who was seriously wounded and "gassed" in France, is now in the Wal-(on-on-Thames Hospital, and progressing favourably. Mr. and Mrs. O'Leary, of Upper Hutt, have been advised that their son, Sergeant Dan O'Leary, was killed in action in Franco on the 10th. inst. Deceased was a nephew of Messrs. James and Steve Dealy and of Sister Paula, St. Mary's Convent. He was born at New Plymouth in 1888, and was educated at the Convent, Hill Street, Newtown, and Hutt. He served his time r.t the Petone Railway Workshops, and after completing his indenture he joined the New South Wales Railways. Immediately ontho outbreak of war ho enlisted m the 13th Battalion of tho 4th Australian Light Horse. He served some time in Egypt, and then went to France.
Sir. G. G. Alexander, a member of tho Bar at Suva, has arrived at Auckland with Mrs. Alexander, and intends leaving for tho front with tho New Zealand Forces. Boforo leaving the Fijian capital, Mr. Alexander received the congratulations of his legal associates, and the well-wishes of the people wero conveyed to him at the.Suva Courthouse on the day before he sailed. ' Sergeant. K. .T. MacKinnon, son of SubInspector MacKinnon, of Palmerstc-ii North, has received a commission in the field. Ho loft Now Zealand with the Rifle Brigade. Mr. E. D. Kirkpatrick, senior instructor in engineering at the New Plymouth Technical College, will go 'into camp on September 19. Mr. H. C. Johnson, ono of the Taranaki Board's agricultural in--structors, will «lso join the Eeinforcements shortly. Dr. J. E. C. Maguire, son of tho late Mr. Allan Maguire, who for the past two years has been P.M.O. to the Worcester Regiment in France, is expected to visit ■ Wellington shortly. The name- of Sergeant W. T. Watson, of the Australian Field Artillery, oldest son of Mr. Robert Watson, of Nelson, appears in the King's Birthday military honours list, Sergeant Watson being awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal. Corporal Carleton Flavell, sen of Mr. W. A. Flavell, local manager of the West-port Coal Company, who was killed in action at Messines on .Tuna 7, forwarded tho following notice which was handed to him in April laot:—"To all concerned.—Colonel Cook wishes me to convey to all members of the covering party on the night of April 19 and 20 his appreciation of their, conduct in No Man's. Land, under arduous circumstances. He specially mentioned the pluck lof Carleton Flavell and all his party in sticking to their post under heavy bomb and rifle fire.—G. H. Davy, Lieut."
