Whether it is not correct that even "now tuoro aro mon engaged ou fatigue ' or other homc-sorvico duties in the camps and elsowhere under tho Defence Department who aro fit for active service; and, if this is true, whether ho will not take steps to see that tho places of such men shall bo filled by returned soldiers, or ■by others who are unfit for active scrvico, and thus relievo to somo extent tho sorious depletion of mon engaged in rural and other essential industries? This question was addressed to tho Defence Minister in the House of Representatives by Mr. 'W. H. Field.
Sir James Allen (Minister of Defence) replied: Every fit soldier' ori the camp staffs, and olsowhere of tho First Division who has not already been on service overseas is unfit for Borvico beydsft the eea or is being replaced and posted to a reinforcement draft. Tho list of Lomeservice men is regularly Verified to ensuro this. Perhaps the most difficult men to Toptnce are the skilled dental mechanics employed in. the camp dental hospitals. If tho honourable member can supply names I shall bo glad to look into tho matter personally. '
