AN INCREASE. The annual report of the City Building Superintendent (Mr. R. F. Drammond) , indicates that, despite the increased cost of material and other charges, building activity has been more than maintained. The total value Of tho work Tor which permits were issued during the year ended March "31, 1917, was as follows.:— 1917. 1916. " n n City district 1G0.09S 139,653 Melrose district 173,922 158,023 Northland district... 10,467 2.9G9 Wadestown district 31,316 5,880 Total 375,833 306,525 An analysis of these figures is given. Ik the city district 220 permits were issued for the erection of new buildings, and for alterations and. additions to existing buildings, as compared with 211 for the year ended March 31, 1916. Details were as follow (figures for 1916 being givon in parentheses):—Dwellings, 28 (28) ; shops and dwellings, 0 (6); business premises, 14 (8); theatres, 3 (1); hotels, 0 (1); churches, 1 (0); alterations and additions, 176 (173). In some instances the permits issued were for two buildings. In the Melrose district 410 permits were issued as against : 328 in the preceding year, the details being :—Dwellings, 303 (266); shops and dwellings, 1 (2); business premises. 0 (1); hnlla. 0 (1): alterations and additions, 110 (90). In some instances the same permit covered two or more dwellings. In the Northland district the permits were 26 as agninst 12, details being:— Dwellings, 16 (5); halls, 0 (1); schools, 1 (0); alterations and additions, 10 (6). In the Wadestown districts 31 permits were is3ued as against 10 last year, as follow :-Dwoliings, 22 (7);' store, 0(1); business premises, 4 (0); schools (additions) 1 (0); alterations and additions, 6 (2).
